What I learned in this is in this class and using my project as an example, the figure of a gun which represents the insecurity that was experienced in the place where my father lived and in the interview I did with him. The figure of a gun has been an intrinsic symbol of insecurity throughout history, evoking fear and danger in various situations. During World War II, the presence of firearms was inextricably linked to the brutality of the conflict. Soldiers carried guns with them as tools of war, but also as a constant reminder of the threat and violence that surrounded their lives. In this context, the gun became an icon of human vulnerability in the midst of war chaos. Likewise, during the 1920s and 1930s in the United States, the figure of the gun also acquired connotations of insecurity in the context of the fight for civil rights. Racial discrimination and systemic violence were manifested through the constant threat of firearms directed towards the African American community. The voices expressing the experiences of being black in America during this era reflect how the presence of guns symbolized not only physical vulnerability, but also the fragility of equality and justice.
At the intersection of war history and the fight for civil rights, the gun stands as an emblem of insecurity that transcends temporal and geographical contexts. Their presence evokes not only physical danger, but also deeper threats to peace and equity. The figure of the gun, imprinted in collective memory, urges us to reflect on the need to address the roots of insecurity and work towards a world where this symbol loses its ominous relevance.
